The Ride Home and Wrap Up (coming soon)

Day 13: Portland, ME to Pittsfield, MA (235 miles)

Well, it was bound to happen.  Rain.  We left Portland under cloudy skies, but perfect temperatures, and rode the back roads of New Hampshire on Route 202 into Concord for breakfast as the skies cleared.  We ate at a little place across the street from the statehouse and watched the thermometer on the bank down the street rise from 77 to 84 just while we were eating breakfast.  Somewhere before we hit Vermont, however, the skies got dark and we suited up during some light showers.  We rode through the entire state of Vermont in rain, but enjoyed the forests and curving mountain roads nonetheless.  It was a beautiful ride and the rain was warm, so it wasn’t that bad.  The rain made it a bit hard to stop for Vermont Maple Syrup or Cheese at the many roadside stores, but next time we will make a point of stopping despite the weather. After a quick new back tire on one of the bikes at Ronnie’s Harley Davidson in Pittsfield, we headed South another 15 miles to the Black Swan Inn on Laurel Lake, right in the heart of the Berkshires.  Tomorrow we’re off for Corning NY and more back roads . . . but this time in New York.

The rain let up enough to take a quick shot of the sign crossing over into Vermont.
