Day 5: Mobile, AL to Macon, GA (448 Miles)
We left Mobile today with our goal being Macon, Georgia. It ended up being a very long day in the saddle, with little time to get off the bike to sightsee along the way, but we managed a riding side trip to the Florida Gulf Coast on the panhandle and also to Andersonville, GA. The weather was picture perfect all day with the beaches in Florida (pristine white sand and aqua blue water) quite a contrast to our California beaches. The roads in Florida and Georgia are superb! The back country we rode through was lush and green as far as your eyes could see. Before heading into Macon, we stopped at a Civil War National Park. Andersonville was the largest prisoner of war camp housing over 30,000 Union soldiers from March 1864 to April 1865. While pictures cannot adequately describe the loss of life during this picture, the memorial grounds themselves were quite impressive and moving to see. We ended the day with a dealership party in Macon complete with two giant roasted pigs. Tomorrow we pick up three more states.
This shows the field where the prisoners were kept, out in the open, for over a year. Various statues have been erected by individual states to memorialize those who did not survive.

Each day ends with a gathering of hundreds of the Posse Riders for dinner.
Finding your bike afterwards is sometimes tricky!
