The Ride Home and Wrap Up (coming soon)

Day 6: Macon, GA to Johnson City, TN (378 Miles)

We left this morning under the threat of rain, but it turned out to be a perfect riding day with slightly overcast skies keeping the temperatures down. We did wait out one quick, nasty storm, at a gas station in the Appalachian Mountains with other riders, and then left under blue skies thirty minutes later, so we feel pretty lucky so far. Today started with a great breakfast at Larry’s Corner Mart & Café in Shadydale, GA. We had the pleasure of eating the best homemade biscuits we’ve ever had while listening to locals talk about the upcoming rodeo, the best business to own (Burger King), and a local children’s beauty pageant. Route 178 between South Carolina and North Carolina has made its way to our top ten Roads to Ride in America with its perfectly banked, winding roads beneath a solid tree canopy for miles and miles. This road took us up the Appalachian Mountains were we found, along with rain, beautiful small towns, each complete with a church and roadside cemetery. A short ride up the Blue Ridge Parkway was cut short by a road closure, but we were able to climb to just under 4,000 feet and take a picture before turning around. After 300 miles of pure back roads, we made a high speed freeway run to the dealership for dinner and socializing. Tomorrow we pick up three more states.

One of the many beautiful churches we passed today.

Every cemetery we passed was beautifully manicured and obviously visited often by family and friends by the number of flowers seen.

One of the many perfect curves found on Route 178.
